Many people are unaware that they suffer from bruxism until their partner or dentist points out the signs. They wake up in the morning with pain in their jaw muscles or teeth. That's why it's important to educate yourself about this disorder.

Below we will explain what bruxism is, its causes and symptoms, and how it can be controlled to save your teeth. If you recognize the above symptoms, make an appointment at the MonDent office in Banja Luka, where our dentists can check if there is any reason for concern.

What is bruxism?

Bruxism is the uncontrolled clenching and grinding of the teeth, most often during sleep. Experts distinguish night bruxism (occurs in the middle of sleep) and daily bruxism (occurring during waking hours). Nocturnal bruxism is much more common and more dangerous because the patient is unaware of the problem while sleeping. Even occasional teeth grinding can damage enamel and supporting structures. Bruxism affects all age groups and it is estimated that about 10% of adults and up to 15% of children grind their teeth occasionally.

Although some become aware of dental problems over time, often the first sign is morning stiffness in the jaw or pain when biting. Left untreated, bruxism can lead to permanent damage to the teeth and jaw, so early detection is key.

Causes of bruxism

Bruxism occurs due to a combination of different factors. Psychological causes, such as stress and anxiety, are considered key triggers: everyday tension often "spills over" into unconscious teeth clenching at night. In addition, important physical causes: Improper tooth position or malocclusion can lead to improper tooth contact when chewing, which encourages bruxism.

Bad habits such as excessive alcohol and caffeine intake, smoking or taking certain medications (e.g. serotonin inhibitors) also increase the risk. There are other factors – genetic predisposition, hormonal changes (e.g. during pregnancy) and sleep disorders (such as apnea) are often associated with the occurrence of bruxism. In short, bruxism usually occurs due to a combination of psychological and physical stimuli: if your daily life is stressful and you have irregular bites, you are more likely to clench or grind your teeth at night.

Symptoms of bruxism

The signs of bruxism can vary and are not limited to teeth. The most common symptoms include:

Pain in the jaw (chewing) muscles or temporomandibular joint – often occurs in the morning after waking up, as a result of excessive tension during the night.

Headache in the morning hours – tension in the head and neck muscles due to bruxism can cause a severe headache, especially in the temples.

Tooth sensitivity and damage – worn tooth surfaces, cracked or loose teeth, and sensitivity to hot/cold indicate that the teeth have been subjected to excessive pressure. Visible scratches in the enamel or cracks in the teeth may also be seen.

Problems with the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) – gnashing can cause a “click” in the joint, problems opening the mouth, or a feeling of a locked jaw. Additionally, regular sciatica – Neck and shoulder pain are also often related to bruxism due to tension in the entire masticatory muscles.

Patients often ignore the symptoms – many people are not even aware that they grind their teeth at night until their partner or dentist tells them. But if you experience any of the above signs (e.g. morning pain, tooth damage or resistance in the jaw), do not ignore them. Regular check-ups with your dentist are key to early detection of bruxism and preventing further damage. If you notice symptoms, be sure to Contact the dentist and make an appointment. for verification.

Bruxism in children

Children also grind their teeth sometimes. It is estimated that a large proportion of children occasionally bite or grind their teeth, but this is usually not permanent. Grinding in children is often temporary as they grow (children's teeth and jaws change rapidly), and usually does not leave permanent consequences unless it is very severe.

However, even for children, bruxism can cause discomfort: it is possible headaches, jaw muscle pain i a harsh 'clicking' sound in the jaw (symptoms similar to adults). Long-term bruxism can lead to excessive wear of baby teeth or premature eruption of permanent teeth due to clenching. Unlike adults, stress is not the main cause in children; more common causes are – allergies, uncomfortable tooth position, mouth irritation, obstructive sleep apnea and heritage.

If parents hear their child grinding their teeth or notice that their child has morning jaw pain or headaches, they should consult a dentist. It is unfortunate that children often do not complain about problems, so it is important to pay attention to signs of worn teeth. In some cases, a dentist may recommend a night guard for the child – however, due to the growth of the jaw, they must be changed and monitored frequently.

Treatment of bruxism

Unfortunately, there is no “cure” that will stop bruxism overnight – the goal of treatment is to protect your teeth and relieve symptoms before more serious damage occurs. The treatment strategy usually combines several measures:

Night splint (guard) for bruxism:

The most common treatment is to have a specialized, custom-made splint made for the patient. This is a thin, transparent “guard” for the teeth (usually made of thermoplastic) that is worn at night. The splint physically separates the upper and lower teeth, relieving pressure and preventing direct wear on the enamel. This significantly reduces morning muscle and joint pain.

At the MonDent office in Banja Luka, we make precise, individual splints for our patients: those prevent further tooth wear, ensure correct jaw position and eliminate jaw pain, headaches and discomfort due to bruxism. A protective splint is made after an examination by a dentist.

Stress reduction:

Since stress is often a trigger, relaxation techniques can be helpful. These include meditation, light physical activity, or relaxing breathing exercises before bed. It is also recommended to pay attention to work habits (regular breaks) and stress therapy with a psychologist if necessary. These self-help measures can reduce the frequency of teeth clenching and help to “release” the tension that otherwise turns into bruxism.

Bite correction and dental procedures:

In more severe cases, the dentist may recommend orthodontic therapy (e.g., braces) or prosthetic procedures (dental crowns, veneers) to correct bite irregularities. This reduces the risk that an irregular bite occasionally causes teeth to clench. Modern dentistry also uses advanced devices such as Modjaw 3D, which simulate jaw movements using digital scans and help achieve an ideal bite. If the tooth has already been damaged, restoration procedures (laser, onlays) and crowns can repair the damage and restore function.

Physiotherapy and massage:

Physical therapy (heat therapy, ultrasound, massage of the masticatory muscles) can relieve painful tension. Massage and stretching of the neck and jaw muscles relax the muscles and can reduce pain. Regular exercises recommended by a physiotherapist or dentist (e.g. mouth opening exercises) can stabilize the jaw position to some extent. In the most severe cases, dentists may prescribe mild muscle relaxants or sedatives to relax the muscles before bedtime.

In addition to the above, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene and go for regular check-ups with your dentist. If you suspect bruxism, seek advice – our specialists at MonDent will quickly assess the condition of your teeth and create the optimal night splint to protect your teeth. For example, our dentists clearly see traces of bruxism on the teeth and after the examination, I can recommend individual therapy. Make an appointment in our office and protect your teeth on time!

Prevention and advice

Although bruxism cannot always be completely avoided, there are useful tips to alleviate symptoms: limit your intake of alcohol and caffeine – these substances worsen teeth grinding habits; avoid smoking and drugs.

Before bed, maintain a relaxation routine (warm bath, meditation) that reduces tension. During the day, try to be aware of clenching – find a way to stop clenching (e.g., keeping your lips slightly closed, teeth slightly apart).

Physical activity and proper breathing can further reduce anxiety. It is crucial to react as soon as symptoms appear – with timely examination by a dentist and a good protective splint, permanent damage can be prevented. enamel and jaw structures.

Conclusion

Bruxism may seem harmless until symptoms become apparent, but in the long run it can seriously damage your teeth and cause jaw and head pain.
