Zirconia crowns represent one of the most modern solutions in dental prosthetics – they restore the smile and functionality of the teeth with superior aesthetic results. In this blog you will learn what the complete process of installing a zirconia crown looks like in MonDent dental office, step by step, from the first consultation to the final dazzling smile. We will also explain why zirconia crowns are a great choice for you and what advantages they bring over traditional dental crowns.

MonDent is the first German dental clinic in Bosnia and Herzegovina and proudly applies German quality standards in all treatments. Our team of experts uses the latest technology and top-quality materials to ensure that every prosthetic work is perfect. With 2D/3D X-rays that provide minimal radiation and digital tooth scanning for our patients, we ensure that diagnostics and planning are precise, and the entire crown installation process is as comfortable as possible.

Below, we describe in detail each step of the zirconia crown installation process and highlight the key reasons why our patients always leave our office with satisfied smiles.

Zirconia crowns – advantages

Before we start explaining the process itself, it is important to understand why Zirconia crowns are so popularand are considered a superior choice over other types of dental crowns (e.g. metal-ceramic). The zirconium dioxide from which these crowns are made provides a unique combination of durability and aesthetics. We have highlighted some of the most important advantages that zirconium crowns bring to patients:

  • Natural look: Zirconia crowns have a color and translucency very similar to natural teeth. Unlike metal-ceramic crowns, they are placed under the gums. will not Instead of showing a dark edge of metal, the crown looks completely natural in any lighting. A smile with a zirconia crown is radiant and aesthetically flawless.
  • High strength and durability: Zirconium is an extremely strong material, more resistant to pressure and cracking compared to classic ceramics. Zirconia crowns are long-lasting and reliable – with proper care they can last ten years or more, making them a worthwhile investment in the long run. They also don't change color over time and don't wear out easily, so your smile will remain stable.
  • Biocompatibility: These crowns are completely metal-free, meaning they do not cause allergic reactions or gum irritation. Zirconium dioxide is a biocompatible material that “sticks” to the tissue – the gums fit nicely against the crown without inflammation or pulling. For patients with sensitive gums, zirconium crowns are a particularly good choice.
  • Tooth preservation: The installation of a zirconia crown requires minimal tooth grinding compared to some other types of crowns. A larger area of healthy tooth tissue is preserved, while the crown protects the weakened tooth from further cracking or decay. It allows for normal chewing function and speech, with an even bite load that protects your gums and jaw.

With these advantages, it is no surprise that zirconia crowns have become the first choice of dentists and patients around the world when it comes to aesthetically and permanently restoring a tooth. Whether a tooth is decayed, cracked, or aesthetically unsatisfactory, this solution can restore your teeth to their natural appearance and full functionality.

The process of installing a zirconia crown – step by step

Alone zirconia crown installation procedure at MonDent office it usually takes place in several visits, through clearly defined steps. So be prepared that this process will take from 7 to 14 days, depending on your current dental condition.

Each phase is important for the final result to be successful and for us to achieve our goal, which is a functional, natural-looking tooth and a satisfied patient.

1. Overview and planning

First step on the way to a new zirconia crown is a thorough dental examination and consultation. The dentist will examine the condition of your teeth and gums, determine if zirconia crowns are the best option for solving your problem, and create a treatment plan. The examination often includes 2/3D X-rays to have a detailed insight into the actual condition of the teeth and jaw.

Based on the examination and images, your dentist will discuss the options with you: whether prior dental treatment is necessary (e.g. nerve treatment or tooth reconstruction if damaged), how many crowns you need, which shade to choose to perfectly match your other teeth, etc. This planning is essential so that the later steps run smoothly.

What we always emphasize to all our patients is that they are free to ask questions if they have any. Our goal is for you to be fully informed and confident in your decision. After you and your dentist have established a plan, we move on to preparing the tooth for the crown.

2. Preparing the tooth for the crown (grinding)

Before the crown is placed, the tooth that will receive the crown must be properly prepared. Tooth preparation involves minimal grinding and shaping the remaining tooth structure into a shape that the crown can "fit" perfectly onto.

The dentist will carefully file the tooth – removing only the layer of enamel that is necessary to make room for the crown to fit, without making it too thick. The goal is to preserve as much healthy tooth tissue as possible. If the tooth already has large fillings or decay, all decay will first be removed and a filling or abutment will be placed to ensure the tooth is healthy and strong under the crown.

If a tooth is missing a large portion of its crown (for example, due to a fracture or after root canal treatment), the dentist may recommend tooth restoration before the crown is placed. This means that a reinforcement will be placed in the root of the tooth, most often fiberglass stake, which will strengthen the tooth and provide stable support for the new crown

This build-up ensures that the zirconia crown has something to attach to and significantly extends the life of the entire restoration. After any build-ups, the tooth is shaped by grinding into a conical shape (the so-called “stump”) on which the future crown will fit perfectly.

During the grinding, we take care of your comfort – we use high-quality anesthesia so that you do not feel any pain. Modern techniques and instruments at MonDent practice enable precise grinding with maximum sparing of the tooth and surrounding tissues. Once the tooth is ground and ready, we proceed to taking an impression.

3. Taking an impression

After preparing the teeth, it is necessary to take a precise impression of the situation in the mouth so that the new crown can be made exactly to measure. The impression is taken using a special paste and mold (which some patients do not like because of the unpleasant feeling in the mouth). At MonDent, we use the most modern technology – digital dental scanWe use a small intraoral camera (scanner) to scan over the prepared tooth and neighboring teeth, and in a few minutes we get a 3D model of your teeth on the screen.

digitalno skeniranje zuba

This method is very fast and comfortable for the patient – there is no unpleasant gel in the mouth or gag reflex that sometimes accompanies classic impressions. The digital impression is also extremely precise, which means that the fabricated zirconia crown will fit perfectly.

Agreement with patients

The resulting digital model of the tooth serves as the basis for the creation of the crown. In this step, the dentist, together with you, selects and shade of color crown that best matches your natural teeth, so that your new “dental suit” blends perfectly with your smile. If you have any shade preferences (some patients want lighter teeth/a general smile makeover), this is the time to emphasize that.

At the end of this visit, a temporary acrylic crown is usually placed on the prepared tooth. It protects the ground tooth and allows you to function normally while you wait for the definitive prosthetic work. The temporary crown is not as aesthetic and functional as a zirconium crown, but it is quite sufficient for those few days. It is bonded with a weaker cement so that it is easy to remove later. With the temporary crown, you can eat carefully and maintain hygiene until the next phase.

4. Making a zirconia crown in the laboratory

Now it's time to make your permanent crown. The fabrication process usually takes several days. In the laboratory, special attention is paid to detail: the shape of the crown is adjusted so that it perfectly mimics your natural tooth, fits smoothly against the gum line, and is aligned with the neighboring teeth. Technicians color the zirconia crown in layers so that the shade and translucency are identical to the natural tooth. After fabrication, the crown is tested on a model to check the precision of the fabrication.

MonDent insists on high standards of material quality – we use proven zirconium of high quality production, which has all the necessary certificates and durability. Since we also have offices in Germany, we transfer the same standard to our work in Banja Luka. The German quality guarantee means that your crown will be made of the highest quality material and the most modern technology currently available.

Once the crown is finished, the lab delivers it back to the office. You are ready for the final phase – fitting and definitive placement of the crown.

5. Trial and cementation of the new crown

At your next visit, your dentist will remove your temporary crown and carefully try on the permanent zirconia crown on your tooth. This is the fitting phase. probe where several things are checked:

  • First, does the crown fit perfectly on the tooth – it must be precisely "tailored" so that there is no empty space between the crown and the tooth.
  • Second, the bite (occlusion) is checked: the patient bites on the indicator paper so that the dentist can see if the crown is interfering with the bite or is too high. If necessary, minor shape corrections are made on the spot (the zirconium can be slightly adjusted with fine diamond burs).
  • Third, the aesthetic impression is assessed – whether the color of the crown matches expectations and blends in with the other teeth, and whether the shape is beautiful and natural. The patient can look in the mirror and confirm that they are satisfied with the appearance.

When both the patient and the dentist are completely satisfied with how the crown looks and "lies", we move on to permanent cementation. The crown is removed, coated on the inside with a special dental cement, and then precisely placed on the tooth. The dentist applies pressure to seat the crown all the way in and removes excess cement. After cementing, the bite is checked again and minimal adjustments are made if necessary to ensure complete comfort and functionality.

Tips for maintaining a zirconia crown

As soon as the crown is bonded, you practically have a new tooth! Your smile is immediately more beautiful, and the damaged or missing part of the tooth has now been successfully replaced. Zirconia crownunique It takes on all the functions of a natural tooth – you can bite, chew and speak normally without fear that the crown will fall out.

You will leave our office with a new smile, but also with instructions and tips for maintenance. It is recommended that you do not eat for the first hour after cementation until the cement has completely set. After that, you can continue with your normal diet (of course, it is always good to avoid extremely hard things in order to preserve both your teeth and crowns).

Maintaining hygiene is simple – brush your teeth regularly and use floss or interdental brushes around the crown to keep your gums healthy. Zirconia crowns are not afraid of dental floss; a properly cemented crown is strong. We will also arrange regular check-ups (usually twice a year) to check the condition of the crown and your overall oral health.
